The leader of the Course of Freedom party is accused of repeatedly disrupting court proceedings and unlawfully influencing judicial officials during a trial in Volos. “I am being targeted for my work in social law and my activist actions,” she stated

The parliamentary request to lift Ms. Zoe Konstantopoulou‘s immunity passed with a broad majority.

A total of 225 MPs voted in favor, 57 against, and one declared “present.”

The case file against the Course of Freedom leader concerns an incident during a recent trial at the Volos Single-Member Misdemeanor Court.

Ms. Konstantopoulou is accused of repeated disruption of court sessions and unlawful influence on judicial officials. According to reports, the allegations include calling the police from her mobile phone during the session, aiming to prompt intervention against the presiding judge and prosecutor. She allegedly removed a microphone from the bench and tampered with the court’s computer during the trial.

“I Am Being Targeted”

Intervening in the process, Ms. Konstantopoulou argued that the lawsuit against her constitutes a “retaliatory act,” “political targeting,” and an “attempt to intimidate and obstruct” her duties. However, she urged all political parties to vote in favor of lifting her immunity, as both she and Course of Freedom have consistently advocated for the abolition of legal immunity.

“I am being targeted for my work in social law and activism, for choosing to stand with vulnerable people against the powers that be, especially those ruthless powers that believe they can cover up and crush everything,” she said, highlighting her position.

New Democracy’s parliamentary spokesperson Thanos Plevris emphasized that rejecting the judicial request to lift Ms. Konstantopoulou’s immunity would send a message that there are two categories of lawyers: “An elite category of lawyers who are also MPs and can threaten judges, cut off microphones, record proceedings, and face no consequences, and the rest, who would face penalties for the same actions.”

“You spoke of political targeting, claiming that the judge allegedly harbors a personal dislike for Ms. Konstantopoulou. However, Ms. Konstantopoulou behaved in the manner I described. The judge deemed this behavior questionable and forwarded the trial records to the relevant prosecutors without further comment. The prosecutors concluded that specific misdemeanors had been committed. Where is the political persecution in that?” he added at another point.
