The 18-year-old standout from Triton Heraklion achieved this remarkable feat during her heat, demolishing the previous record of 16:32.41 held by Georgia Makri. Vasilaki’s time not only set a new national benchmark but also broke the record in three categories simultaneously: women, young women, and juniors. Her achievement marks a significant milestone for Greek swimming, highlighting her as one of the country’s most promising athletes.
Finishing first in her heat, Vasilaki now awaits the afternoon’s “fast” heats to determine her final ranking in the event.
Damasioti Qualifies for Butterfly Semifinals
In another impressive showing for Greece, Georgia Damasioti secured a spot in the semifinals of the 100m butterfly. The 21-year-old swimmer, who placed 9th in the 200m butterfly after breaking the national record just a day earlier, clocked an excellent 57.14 in her heat. This time set a new national record for young women and earned Damasioti the 14th spot among 49 competitors, securing her passage to the semifinals scheduled for 19:20 local time.
World Records Also Fall in Budapest
The competition witnessed a world-class performance from Gretchen Walsh of the United States, who obliterated the world record in the 100m butterfly during the qualifying heats. Walsh posted a jaw-dropping time of 53.24, surpassing the previous record of 54.05 set by Canada’s Maggie McNeil in Melbourne on December 18, 2022.
