Amid growing tensions in the Middle East, King Abdullah II of Jordan has underscored the importance of regional stability during a phone call with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This conversation comes as Jordan witnesses a wave of public protests in solidarity with Gaza, with thousands of citizens voicing their support for the Palestinian cause.

In his call with the Greek leader, the monarch reiterated the urgency of collective efforts to de-escalate the conflict and ensure peace across the region. King Abdullah highlighted that Jordan, as a key player in the Arab world, remains committed to supporting Palestinian rights and pursuing lasting solutions to the ongoing crisis. Both leaders discussed the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict, with King Abdullah stressing that a stable and peaceful Middle East is crucial for the prosperity and security of all nations involved.

Meanwhile, back in Jordan, the capital, Amman saw thousands of protesters march through the streets in a powerful show of solidarity with Gaza. The demonstrations, organized by grassroots groups and supported by various political factions, reflect the deepening sense of unity among Jordanians regarding the Palestinian struggle. The protesters called for an end to the Israeli occupation and demanded greater international intervention to protect Palestinian lives and sovereignty.

The demonstrations were peaceful but marked by strong speeches and slogans condemning Israeli actions in Gaza. Several participants held placards reading “Free Palestine” and “End the Siege on Gaza.” The protestors were also calling on the international community to take more decisive action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

At the diplomatic level, King Abdullah’s conversation with PM Mitsotakis follows a recent uptick in regional tensions, particularly along Lebanon’s southern border with Israel, where hostilities have escalated despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United Nations last month.

In Lebanon, the situation remains dire. The Lebanese army announced on Friday that its forces had been deployed to the border village of Khiam, continuing efforts to stabilize the southern region after a wave of Israeli airstrikes and incursions. These actions came after a report by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) warned that Lebanon is on the brink of collapse, severely impacting its social, health, and economic infrastructure. The UN agency called for urgent attention to the country’s dire situation, emphasizing the need to reassess priorities to ensure Lebanon’s recovery.

Despite the ceasefire agreement, which stipulates Israeli troop withdrawal and Lebanese army deployment to the south of the Litani River, tensions remain high. The Lebanese army began clearing roads in the Khiam region and removing potential explosive remnants of war. At the same time, the Israeli military continued to conduct airstrikes in the south, further complicating the situation.

In the aftermath of recent violence, the death of a Lebanese citizen, Mustafa Awada, who was killed in an Israeli drone attack, has sparked outrage and mourning among local communities. Awada was broadcasting live on social media when he was struck, along with several others who sustained injuries.

As the situation evolves, the Lebanese military and Hezbollah vowed to uphold the ceasefire terms and coordinate efforts to restore stability. However, with continued hostilities and political tensions simmering across the region, achieving long-term peace and security remains elusive.

For Jordan, the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the broader regional instability underscores the necessity of continued diplomatic engagement and support for humanitarian efforts. As King Abdullah reiterated in his call with the Greek PM, stability in the Middle East is integral to the people of Palestine and Israel and the entire region, with Jordan playing a pivotal role in fostering peace and dialogue.
