The countdown has commenced for Greece’s presidential selection, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis plans to reveal his candidate for the nation’s top ceremonial position by mid to late January.
Crucial discussions are set to take place during the holiday period in Hania, Crete, which will influence this significant decision.
Current President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, whose term concludes on March 13, 2025, remains in consideration for another term. However, political insiders indicate that Mitsotakis is inclined to choose a candidate representing centrist values to secure support from all 156 members of his ruling party while challenging opposition parties, particularly the main opposition, PASOK.
The prime minister is under increasing pressure to finalize his choice by the end of January, as the parliamentary voting process is scheduled to commence by mid-February. Up to five voting rounds might be necessary, depending on the candidate’s ability to achieve the required majority.
Initially, 200 votes are needed, dropping to 180 and subsequently to 151 votes in later rounds.
Notable candidates under consideration include former Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, former PASOK Vice President Evangelos Venizelos, Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras, and other center-left politicians.
Mitsotakis faces the challenge of deciding if selecting a new candidate might overshadow Sakellaropoulou, Greece’s first female president, who remains favorably viewed.
This decision is pivotal, signaling either continuity or change in Greece’s political landscape.
As the festive season unfolds, all eyes are on Mitsotakis and his forthcoming decision, given its substantial political implications.
