Greece Introduces “Neighbourhood Caregiver” Programme for Long-Term Care Needs

The Greek government has announced an innovative initiative aimed at transforming long-term care services across the country.

The “Neighbourhood Caregiver” programme, set to launch next year, was unveiled by Social Cohesion and Family Minister Sofia Zaharaki during an interview with MEGA TV on Monday.

Designed within the framework of the National Strategy for Long-Term Care, the programme builds on the successful models of the “Neighbourhood Babysitters” and “Personal Assistant” schemes for individuals with disabilities. It seeks to provide crucial support for people of all ages requiring care, offering a state-backed solution for their daily needs.

“This is the first time Greece is establishing a comprehensive strategy for long-term care that addresses the needs of individuals at every stage of life,” Zaharaki stated.

The minister highlighted that the programme would cater not only to the elderly but also to individuals with disabilities, aiming to make their daily lives easier. A key feature is the financial support offered to carers, with the government providing a monthly voucher of €500-€550 for each person in need. Carers, much like those in the “Neighbourhood Babysitters” initiative, will be able to assist multiple individuals, maximising their impact in the community.

“For the first time, the state will directly pay private individuals who provide care, formalising their role with official recognition,” Zaharaki explained.

The programme will also establish criteria and conditions to ensure the quality and suitability of carers. Discussions about these requirements are ongoing, with the government committed to building a system that benefits both carers and recipients.

This new initiative marks a significant step in Greece’s efforts to modernise and expand its social welfare services, addressing the growing demand for long-term care in an ageing society.
