Christmas with snow, thunderstorms and gale force winds brings bad weather “Elena” to Greece.

According to meteorologists, intense phenomena are expected, with snowfall, strong winds and storms in many areas of Greece.

Marousakis: “Drop in temperature”

According to Klearchos Marousakis, northerly winds are expected to drop the temperature significantly in the coming days. “Christmas weather in the coming days with snow not only in the high mountains but also lower down, rains towards the Aegean side and north winds dominating towards the east bringing down the temperature,” he said in his post.

According to Giannis Kallianos, rain is expected in the lowlands and snow in the mountains.

Strong northerly winds will be recorded in the Aegean Sea from Thursday, reaching 8-9 Beaufort.

Locally it will snow at low altitudes and specific snow is expected:

– Thursday (evening): lowlands of Thrace – Friday (evening): lowlands of Macedonia – Thrace – Saturday (morning): from 350 m – Thessaly, Epirus, Central and Western Sterea

From Friday, a further drop in temperature is expected and the cold will be more noticeable.

Quite low temperatures are expected in some areas, specifically:

– Florina: -8°C – Nefrokopi: -8°C – Karpenisi: -3°C – Tripoli: 0°C – Thessaloniki: 1°C

How the bad weather will develop in the next days

The National Meteorological Service has issued a weather bulletin warning of severe storms, gusty winds and heavy snowfall in the mountains and central Greece, while snow is expected to fall in the mountains of Attica.

Heavy rains and mainly coastal thunderstorms in the Sporades, central and northern Evia, the Dodecanese, in the southernmost parts of the East Aegean (Samos – Ikaria area) and from the afternoon in eastern Thessaly (Magnesia), eastern Sterea, southern Evia and the western Cyclades.

Snowfall will occur in the mountainous mainland, the mountainous areas of Evia and Crete and locally in semi-mountainous areas of central and northern Greece. Snowfall will be dense from the afternoon in the mountains of eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

Gusty northeast winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort will blow from the afternoon in Thrace, Thrace, the Thracian, the northeastern Aegean and the Sporades.

Thursday, December 26

In the eastern mainland and the Aegean increased clouds with local rain and mainly in the central and southern maritime and coastal parts of the sea – coastal parts sporadic thunderstorms. Rains in eastern Thessaly (Magnesia), the Sporades, Evia, eastern Sterea (Fthiotida and Boeotia), the Cyclades (mainly the western and northern ones) and from midday in Attica and eastern Peloponnese will be locally heavy.

In the western mainland and the Ionian Sea, clouds, partly cloudy with some local rain and possibly in the western Peloponnese isolated thunderstorms.

Snowfall will occur in the continental mountains, the mountains of Evia and Crete and in some places in semi-mountainous areas of central and northern Greece. In the mountains of eastern Macedonia and Thrace snowfall will be heavy.

In the eastern and eastern parts of the region, in the south-eastern part of Macedonia and in the north-eastern part of the region, the weather will be thicker. Winds will blow north northeast 4 to 6, in the eastern mainland locally 7 and in the northern Aegean 7 to 8, increasing from the morning hours in Thrace, Thrace, the southern parts of Halkidiki, the northeastern Aegean, the Sporades and Evia to 9 Beaufort. In the southeastern Aegean, the winds will be westerly southwestern 3 to 5 Beaufort, up to 6 Beaufort in the morning hours.

The temperature will drop slightly further, mainly in the north. It will reach 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in the northern mainland, while in the northwest (in the interior of Epirus and western Macedonia) it will not exceed 5 to 7 degrees Celsius, in the western mainland and the Ionian Sea 14 to 15 degrees Celsius, in the rest of the mainland 11 to 13 degrees Celsius and in the eastern islands 15 to 16 degrees Celsius.

In the morning and evening hours, frost will occur in some places on the mainland, mainly in the northwest.

Friday, December 27

In Thessaly, the Sporades, eastern Sterea, Euboea and eastern Peloponnese, increasing clouds with local showers and in the Cyclades, Crete and the southernmost parts of the Dodecanese islands sporadic thunderstorms. In the rest of the country, a few clouds, partly cloudy with local showers from the afternoon in Macedonia and Thrace. Snowfall will occur in the continental highlands and from the evening in some parts of the northern part of the country.

Winds will blow north northeast, in the west 4 to 6, in the east 6 to 7 and in the Aegean Sea 8, possibly occasionally 9 Beaufort, gradually weakening from the afternoon hours.

From now onwards, the weather will be mild to mild in the afternoon, with some weakening in the afternoon, and in the evening and afternoon. The temperature will drop again, mainly in the east and north. In the morning and evening hours, frost will occur in places on the continents, possibly locally strong in the northwestern continents.

Saturday, December 28

In the west, the central, the north, the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese clouds, partly cloudy with local rain and mainly in the southernmost maritime and coastal parts isolated thunderstorms. In the rest of the country a few clouds, locally increased with local showers at times in the Cyclades and Crete.

Snowfall will occur in the continental highlands and in places in the central and northern highlands.

Winds will blow north northeast, in the west 4 to 6, in the east 5 to 7 and in the Aegean Sea occasionally 8 Beaufort.

The temperature will not change significantly. In the morning and evening hours in some places on the continents there will be frost, possibly locally strong in the northwestern continents.

Which areas are already “dressed in white”

In Kalavryta it has been snowing for the last few hours and access is only possible with anti-slip chains.

In Pertouli Trikala, people had the opportunity to play with snowon Christmas Eve, while the mountainous area of the prefecture is dressed in white and snow has covered large areas.

Snowfall is heavy in Evritania, Arachova, Kastoria and Metsovo, but also in Lagadia in Arcadia.

Snow also fell in Trikala, Corinthia.
