The Parnassos Ski Centre, one of Greece’s premier winter destinations, is set to undergo significant upgrades following an €8.7 million investment from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
The funding, announced on Friday by Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni during her visit to the site, aims to modernise infrastructure and enhance visitor services.
The investment aligns with the Tourism Ministry’s strategic objective to diversify Greece’s tourism offerings, promoting mountain tourism and extending the tourism season. “Our goal is to expand tourism across more regions and throughout the year,” Kefalogianni stated. “By upgrading infrastructure and refining the institutional framework, we aim to position Greece’s mountainous areas as leading destinations for outdoor recreation.”
Located near Delphi in Central Greece, the Parnassos Ski Centre stands at an altitude of 2,457 metres, spanning the areas of Kelaria and Fterolaka. The centre is a vital hub for winter sports enthusiasts, offering 11 operational lifts and 21 slopes. During the recent holiday season, it recorded a historic milestone, with 6,000 tickets sold in a single day, surpassing its previous record of 4,500 set in 2022.
Centre director Antonis Tourkohoritis briefed the minister on the latest operational updates. Despite the holiday rush, minor delays occurred at some lift starting points due to ongoing maintenance. Notably, the “Hercules” lift is undergoing modernisation as part of the RRF-funded upgrades and will be replaced by an environmentally friendly six-seater lift. Additionally, repairs on the “Aiolos” lift, damaged by severe weather in September, are expected to conclude within a month.
Safety and Sustainability at the Forefront
The Hellenic Public Properties Company (ETAD), which oversees the ski centre, emphasised its commitment to safety and environmental sustainability. Annual investments in lift maintenance and electrical systems ensure compliance with strict safety standards, with all lifts certified by the Tourism Ministry.
The upgrades are expected to not only enhance the visitor experience but also boost the local economy by attracting more tourists to the region year-round. With its picturesque location and historical proximity to Delphi, the Parnassos Ski Centre is poised to become a beacon of mountain tourism in Greece.
As Greece continues to invest in its diverse tourism portfolio, the Parnassos Ski Centre represents a significant step towards promoting sustainable, high-quality experiences in its mountainous regions.
