Health officials in Greece are on high alert following the confirmation of the country's first case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV). The virus, often associated with respiratory illness, was detected in a 71-year-old man in Thessaloniki.

The patient’s daughter had recently returned from a holiday trip to China, raising concerns about potential international transmission. Just days after her return, the man began experiencing symptoms and sought medical attention at a private clinic. He was subsequently admitted to Papanikolaou Hospital on January 3rd, chosen for its renowned pulmonology department.

A PCR test administered on Saturday returned positive for HMPV on Monday. Prior to the diagnosis, the patient shared a room with two others in the First Pulmonology Clinic. Following the confirmation, he was immediately placed in isolation, and contact tracing procedures were initiated. Visiting hours for the other patients in the shared room were also suspended.

The patient’s condition worsened on Tuesday, prompting his transfer to the Second Pulmonology Clinic. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and emphasizing the importance of preventative measures, such as regular handwashing and respiratory hygiene. While HMPV is not typically as severe as other respiratory viruses, it can pose a greater risk for vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
