Greece’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to a peaceful and inclusive political transition in Syria during a UN Security Council meeting on the ongoing crisis in the region.
Ambassador Sekeris emphasised the historic significance of the fall of the Assad regime, describing it as a defining moment for Syria and the wider Middle East.
“The fall of Assad’s authoritarian regime marks a watershed moment for Syria and the region,” Sekeris stated. “However, this transition comes with both opportunities and risks. Syrians deserve peace, achieved through an inclusive and democratic process, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.”
Key Points of Greece’s Statement
- Support for Syrian Sovereignty and Unity: Greece stressed its support for Syria’s independence, territorial integrity, and unity, calling for a political process free of foreign interference.
- Protection of Civilians and Heritage: The Ambassador highlighted the importance of protecting all civilians, particularly religious and ethnic minorities, and safeguarding Syria’s cultural heritage, including monuments significant to the Greek Orthodox community.
- Refugee Return and Humanitarian Aid: Greece underscored the urgent need to facilitate the safe, voluntary return of refugees, working in collaboration with UN agencies like UNHCR and OCHA.
- Counterterrorism Efforts: The statement also warned of the increasing risks posed by terrorist groups such as ISIL and called for international cooperation to address these threats.
- Regional Stability: Greece urged all regional actors to practice restraint and contribute responsibly to stabilisation efforts, avoiding actions that could undermine Syria’s transition or inflame tensions in the broader Middle East.
A Call for Concrete Action
Ambassador Sekeris called on Syria’s new authorities to demonstrate a tangible commitment to inclusiveness, human rights, and international law. He emphasised the importance of collaboration with the UN Special Envoy to establish a clear roadmap for political and constitutional reforms, aligning with the principles of UNSC Resolution 2254.
He also expressed Greece’s concern over the potential regional ramifications of Syria’s upheaval, emphasising the need for international and regional actors to prioritise stabilisation and reconciliation efforts.
Greece’s Role in the Region
Reflecting Greece’s historical ties with the Arab world, Ambassador Sekeris reaffirmed the country’s readiness to support peace and stability in the Middle East. He noted the Greek Prime Minister’s recent visit to Beirut as a testament to Greece’s commitment to regional cooperation amid volatile conditions.
Concluding his address, Sekeris reiterated Greece’s vision for a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Syria, pledging ongoing support through diplomatic and humanitarian channels.
