This retrial comes 18 months after the initial verdict, as the head of the Appeals Prosecutor’s Office has challenged the original sentences, demanding harsher penalties for the accused.

The trial of 12 young PAOK football fans accused in the murder of 19-year-old Alkis Kampanos, a case that sent shockwaves through Greece due to its violent and fan-related motives, begins anew at the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal in Thessaloniki.

This retrial comes 18 months after the initial verdict, as the head of the Appeals Prosecutor’s Office has challenged the original sentences, demanding harsher penalties for the accused.

The first-instance court had sentenced seven of the defendants to life imprisonment plus additional multi-year sentences for complicity in manslaughter with possible malice, while the remaining five received suspended sentences for lesser roles in the attack. However, Thessaloniki Appeals Prosecutor Nikos Kallidis has appealed the decision, arguing that the charges should reflect direct malice rather than possible malice, which would lead to more severe punishments.

Trial to Restart for Most Accused

If the court opens proceedings today, the trial will essentially start from scratch for 10 of the 12 defendants. The appeals court is not bound by the initial verdict, allowing for a fresh examination of the evidence and charges. Requests for adjournment are expected but will be subject to judicial approval.

The prosecutor’s appeal focuses on upgrading the charges against three of the defendants. Kallidis argues that one should face charges of instigating the homicide with direct intent, while the other two should be tried for aiding and abetting the same act. Two defendants, however, remain unaffected by the appeal, and for them, the legal principle of not worsening their position applies.

A Crime That Shook a Nation

The murder of Alkis Kampanos occurred in the early hours of February 1, 2022, in Thessaloniki’s Harilaou district. The incident, fueled by football-related violence, also involved an attack on Kampanos’ two friends, who were injured during the altercation. This brutal act sparked nationwide outrage, highlighting the darker side of fan culture in Greek sports.

The retrial not only revisits the tragic loss of a young life but also serves as a pivotal moment in addressing fan violence in Greece. As the courtroom drama unfolds, the public awaits justice for Alkis Kampanos and his grieving family.
