“Thanks to the wristband, patients can track the waiting times of the hospital on calls, so they can choose by themselves where to go in order to be less inconvenienced,” Adonis Georgiades noted recently.
Specifically, the Health Minister first stressed that “we are introducing certain health centres to the on-call services. These are exclusively health centres that have substantial technological equipment. For example, the Keratsini health centre has superb technological equipment.”
Asked about the wristband, Adonis Georgiades replied that “thanks to this electronic wristband, all patients will receive a QR code. With the wristband we will calculate the waiting times. Citizens will have access to a special application on their mobile phones. So before a patient goes to a hospital’s on-call service, they will know how long the waiting time is per hospital. In the pilot phase, only we will have access to it, but then everyone will be able to have access to it. The wristband is powered by artificial intelligence. Patients will be able to monitor the waiting times of on-call services at a hospital, so that they can choose where they go to be less inconvenienced. When there is a serious delay, there will be an email notification to the hospital management. In 2026 there will be an app that will inform the citizens about the waiting time in public hospitals. In 4 pilot hospitals the wristband project will be put in effect regarding waiting time in on-call services.”
Regarding the recruitment of medical and nursing staff, the Health Minister noted that “we have announced 500 paramedics and 250 doctors for the emergency departments alone. The programme with Red Cross nurses will be added to the above”.
Addressing the shortage of GPs, A. Georgiades stressed that “without a GP, there is no on-call service. Pathology is the “king of specialties”. The GP is at the ‘heart’ of the on-call service. We give additional incentives for a doctor to choose this specialty.
The pressure on on-call services is severe. Doctors on call work under very great pressure. In 2024, we have given doctors the opportunity to provide private services.”
Regarding the time reduction in waiting time in on-call services, it was mentioned that “the difference is beginning to become more noticeable. When we implement all the measures, by Easter the ordinary citizen will see a substantial difference. I have worked hard on this. From the very beginning of taking over as minister, I have made it my goal to reduce waiting times in on-call services. Renovation projects will be carried out in 2025 in all hospitals. However, renovation projects cause an additional burden. Ideal waiting time is to be found in the Nordic countries, where the waiting time is in the range of 4 hours. In Great Britain, the NHS has huge problems. Our aim is to move the waiting time towards six hours. Where there is a lot of pressure in the on-call rooms, the neighbouring health centre will also be utilised.”
Regarding the online platform for making appointments with doctors, the Health Minister explained that “the platform is called finddoctors.gov.gr. The platform is easy to use.It finds the nearest doctor to the patient. Also, we will introduce a 4-digit number, where all the Ministry of Health will be listed: doctors, health centers, hospitals, etc.”
About Turkaegean, A. Georgiades said that “it is an unimaginable national success. I acted with Mr. George Gerapetritis. The decision abolishes Turkaegean. Those who insulted me owe me an apology“.
On possible transfers of paramedics to political offices, it was clarified that “as far as I know there are no paramedics in political offices. The law states that a member of parliament can have up to 4 civil servants“.
With regard to the President of the Republic, the Minister of Health further argued that “we are approaching what is constitutionally required. It is a constitutional prerogative of the Prime Minister. This privilege is granted by the Constitution. I am not interfering in the issue of the President of the Republic. The Prime Minister decides.”
