The city of Athens is set to name a street after the late former Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Mayor Haris Doukas announced on Wednesday during the first city council meeting of the year.
The announcement came after a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Simitis, who passed away on 5 January. Simitis, a prominent political figure, served as prime minister from 1996 to 2004 and is remembered for his contributions to modernising Greece and leading the country into the eurozone.
The meeting also addressed other municipal matters, including the non-renewal of contracts for three staff members at the city’s radio station, Athina 9.84, as well as an update on fees related to urban waste disposal at the city’s landfill.
The street-naming initiative highlights Athens’ commitment to honouring influential figures in Greece’s political history, with Mayor Doukas emphasising Simitis’ enduring legacy in shaping the country’s future.
