“2025 will be the year of full upgrade of ESY services at all levels, with improved buildings, better equipment and with more staff,” Adonis Georgiades states. Continuing, the tradition of his visits to hospitals and other structures of ESY during the festive period, he reiterated his non-negotiable will for radical changes in the public health system for the new year.
More specifically, the Minister of Health visited, as was the case on Christmas day too, public hospitals, as well as the central administration at the EKAB.
At EKAB, the Minister of Health exchanged cordial greetings with rescuers in the operations room, followed by a series of visits to public hospitals in the district, where he made known his intention to enforce and continue with further reforms.
At Sismanoglio Hospital, A. Georgiades decided to incorporate a new renovation project and then he visited KAT, where he did not miss the opportunity to inspect the renovation projects that are carried out in the Emergency Department (ED).
He also visited the Elefsina airfield of the EKAB and then Thriasio Hospital, where he inspected the works, which are completely on schedule. Continung, the minister visited Laiko Hospital, where he saw the new equipment with the most up to date beds placed in the wardsof the clinics, providing greater comfort and care for patients, and concluded his visits within the ICU of Elpis.
In each hospital, the Minister of Health did not fail, of course, to listen carefully to the working doctors and nurses, paramedics, rescuers, drivers and mechanics, to whom he further explained the changes that have been made and are imminent in the public health system.
The pending emblematic changes in the public health care system hospitals..
In the context of these visits, the reformist will of the political leadership of the Ministry of Health for structural, qualitative reforms in the ESY was further pointed out.
In particular, it was stressed that 2025 will be the year in which most of the reforms will be completed through the Recovery Fund, together with the renovations of the building infrastructure of the ESY hospitals since their establishment. In particular, 93 hospitals and 158 health centres will be renovated, at a total cost of €500 million.
In addition, €100 million will be made available for the supply of new technological equipment for the health sector, both for hospitals and health centres.
At the beginning of the new year, the plan for upgrading services in emergency departments will also be presented. The plan has been designed by the Ministry of Health and is based on five axes aiming to drastically reduce waiting times in emergency departments.
This is a personal bet for A. Georgiades. Within the first two months of 2025, the implementation of the first tracking of patients in the emergency departments of the hospitals is to provide the health authorities with the necessary information to control and intervene in their operation. The patient arriving at the Emergency Room will receive a QR code, which will be scanned and his “journey” will be monitored from clinic to clinic. In this way it will be possible to determine which clinic is causing delays in order to address the problem.
Indeed, the Ministry’s aim is to reduce waiting times in emergency departments by 20% compared to the year 2024. At the same time, all emergency departments are being renovated, and we expect to see a significantly improved picture by the end of 2025. In addition, from next June, it was noted that the institution of the Personal Doctor is to be fully implemented, thanks to recent interventions by the Ministry of Health, which are expected to guarantee the necessary number of doctors to cover the entire population.
It should be noted that the relevant law requires compulsory registration of the adult population, including the uninsured, by the 1st of June 2025. For minors, registration is mandatory for those who have reached the age of 16. Within the year, free access to personal care paediatricians will also be activated for 530,000 children.
And then there’s the much-discussed new health map, which is expected to take shape in 2025, reflecting the real needs in terms of structures, staff, equipment, measures and programmes. This map will provide a clear picture of the current situation in the health system and will highlight the necessary changes to provide better service to citizens in each geographic area, as well as save resources. In discussions with employees, Adonis Georgiades assured the medical and nursing staff that no hospital would be closed; however, there will be changes and mergers in departments, as well as the creation of new departments. At the same time, there will be horizontal changes in the administrative organization of the country’s hospitals, and changes in departments from hospital to hospital.
It was also pointed out that according to the planning for the new year, a total of 4 000 more posts are to be advertised, which will be distributed according to the needs for medical, nursing and other staff. Of these, more than 700 posts will be for the recruitment of doctors in hospitals and more than 1 000 posts for the recruitment of nursing staff.
“As far as we are concerned,” the Minister of Health notes, referring to the reforms and his experience from the discussions he had in public hospitals and the EKAB, “we wanted to see in practice (ie:.hospital staff) that the leadership of the Ministry of Health both understands their sacrifice of spending time away from their families on such days to offer their services to ESY, but we also absolutely respect their work. In such a spirit of mutual respect andcollaboration in 2025 we will change ESY and make it as modern as possible.”

In more detail, Adonis Georgiades said in his post on the social media:
“It was New Year’s Day yesterday and with the Deputy Minister Marios Themistocleous and the General Secretary Mrs. Vildiridou we decided to visit structures of ESY departments that are on call and know neither of holidays nor of vacations. So,we went there, exchanged wishes, cut the first New Year’s cakes of 2025 and handed out pieces to all the staff to have a happy new year.
So, we also went to EKAB at the Central Command where we cut the New Year Cakes with the employees in our Central crew and the rescuers in the Operations ward.
Then we visited Sismanoglio Hospital’s ICU and using this opportunity we decided to incorporate a new renovation project there as well.
We also inspected the many projects in the emergency room of KAT hospital and the renovation projects of TA.
Later we visited the air ambulance base in Elefsina. After that we went to Thriasio Hospital in the ICU. There we inspected the projects of both the TA and the ESPA, with a total budget of 12.000.000€ which are completely on schedule.
Following that we visited the ICU of Laiko hospital, where we saw the new equipment with the most up-to-date beds that we placed in the wards providing the greatest comfort and care for our patients.
And we finished our visits at Elpis in the ICUs.
Everywhere we chatted with many patients and their attendants, listened to their complaints and received their gratitude (we had both of the above). We listened to the working doctors, nurses, paramedics, rescuers, drivers, mechanics, etc. who told us what they expect from us in 2025.
We wanted them to see in action that the leadership of the Ministry of Health both understands the sacrifice of missing time from their families on days like these to contribute to ESY, and we also fully respect their work. With such a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation we will go all the way to 2025 to change ESY and make it as modern as possible. Mark my words, 2025 will be the year of the complete upgrade of ESY services at all levels, with more efficient buildings, better equipment and more staff.
Happy New Year full of Health for everybody.”
