This initiative, originally introduced in 2020 as part of a broader effort to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, had faced a brief interruption at the end of 2024.

In a move aimed at bolstering its commitment to electric mobility, the Greek government has reinstated free parking for electric vehicles in municipal parking lots until the end of 2026.

This initiative, originally introduced in 2020 as part of a broader effort to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, had faced a brief interruption at the end of 2024.

According to the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, electric vehicle owners can now apply for parking fee exemptions online via the government’s official website. Successful applicants will receive a parking sticker signifying their exemption status. However, this policy does not extend to parking spaces managed privately.

The free parking initiative is applicable to both fully electric and low-emission vehicles with CO2 emissions not exceeding 50 g/km. While the current extension is valid until December 31, 2026, there is potential for further extensions depending on future assessments.

This policy is part of Greece’s ambitious package unveiled in 2020, which also includes subsidies covering up to 15% of an electric vehicle’s purchase price and plans for extensive charging infrastructure. Despite these supportive measures, Greece’s dedication to nurturing electric mobility came under scrutiny in 2024 when a decree from the Ministry of Shipping imposed restrictions on transporting electric vehicles on ferries, allowing only those with maximum battery charges of 40%, ostensibly due to safety considerations.

As the nation continues to navigate its path towards sustainability and reduced carbon emissions, this renewed focus on facilitating electric vehicle use underscores Greece’s ongoing efforts to align with broader environmental goals.
