The Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, has requested extraordinary evaluations within the Armed Forces from the Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS), General Dimitrios Choupi.
Mr. Dendias has called for the initiation of extraordinary evaluations for the ranks of Brigadier General (Army), Commodore (Navy), and Brigadier General (Air Force), as well as for the ranks of Colonel, Captain (Navy), and Group Captain, specifically for officers who meet the criteria for mature retirement benefits.
The purpose of these extraordinary evaluations, which follow those conducted on January 10, 2025, is to implement the new Force Structure as part of the “Agenda 2030” initiative, optimize the number of senior and higher-ranking officers, adapt to modern operational demands, and expedite reforms.
As previously reported by To Thema, following the approval of the new Armed Forces structure by the Greek Parliament—through a broadly consensual and confidential process—the recent extraordinary evaluations marked the launch of the next phase. According to reliable sources, this phase involves not only the merging of units but also the consolidation of duties.
In practice, the evaluation system is expected to shift focus towards the capabilities of permanent staff. The proposed reforms also include merging roles within the higher echelons of the hierarchy. For instance, the Deputy Chief of HNDGS will also take on the role of Inspector General, while the Commander of the Directorate for Construction and Disaster Response (DIKAFKA) will oversee the consolidations outlined in the new structure.
