A meeting of experts and state officials was convened at the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry on Wednesday to discuss an uptick in seismic-volcanic activity in the area of the Santorini caldera.
The meeting, chaired by Minister Vassilis Kikilias, focused on the implementation of measures to better prepare civil protection efforts on the wildly popular southern Aegean island, considering its unique geological conditions.
According to the recommendations of the Permanent Scientific Committee for the Monitoring of the Greek Volcanic Arc, a spike in activity has been observed in the central fault of Kameni in the northern part of the caldera.
The committee is, therefore, constantly monitoring the phenomenon, analyzing the data and updating plans for the corresponding prevention actions.
The recent volcanic activity is similar to that of 2011-2012, which lasted about 14 months and came to an end without a volcanic event, the ministry said in an announcement.
According to the experts, the data so far does not indicate any cause for concern
