The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has announced a call for tenders for the acquisition of 125 new 12-meter electric buses for the urban transportation network of Athens. This initiative is part of the broader government program to renew the capital’s urban bus fleet, which is currently underway.
This announcement follows the update of the “Public Transport – Electrification” program, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, involving the Ministries of Infrastructure and Transport and National Economy and Finance. With the signature of Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis, €88,350,000 of European funds have been allocated for the project’s completion by the summer of 2026.
These new vehicles are in addition to the planned procurement of 950 new buses within 2025, an effort already being undertaken by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and its supervisory authorities, such as OASA and OSY SA.
Minister Christos Staikouras stated: “The announcement of this new tender demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving public transportation. This project not only advances the full modernization of the fleet but also offers enhanced services to passengers, boosts accessibility, and reduces the environmental footprint.”
Nikos Papathanasis noted: “Renewing the fleet with new, environmentally friendly buses showcases the direction of European funds towards public benefits. The secured funds and the government’s economic strategy bring returns to all citizens.”
