At approximately 11:00 AM, a 4.8 Richter earthquake was detected 25 kilometers south-southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos. This measurement was subsequently revised to 4.9 Richter. The tremor was one of several in the area, following earlier quakes of 4.6 and 4.1 Richter at 10:36 AM and 10:56 AM, respectively.

The Cyclades region has been experiencing a surge in seismic activity, marked by a new earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale.

This event is part of a sequence of significant tremors observed in recent hours, impacting islands such as Santorini and Amorgos.

The tremor was one of several in the area, following earlier quakes of 4.6 and 4.1 Richter at 10:36 AM and 10:56 AM, respectively.

Scientists, including Professor Kostas Papazachos, have remarked on a “clearly better” overall situation but emphasize that vigilance is required. Although a decrease in seismic activity had been observed, the potential for further tremors remains, and the alert level is sustained.

Concerns about the potential activation of the Santorini volcano have been addressed, with experts asserting that no evidence exists to directly connect the recent seismic movements with volcanic activity. Such speculative claims without empirical support are discouraged, as per Professor Papazachos.

In response to the seismic events, inspections on building stability are ongoing in Santorini. Authorities have closed specific roads, particularly those leading to critical infrastructure, as a precautionary measure. Efforts are also focused on providing for students taking national examinations, with temporary school closures under consideration to ensure safety.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Santorini to review the implemented civil protection measures and discuss community needs. He stressed the importance of readiness without fostering panic, recognizing Santorini’s crucial role as a major tourist destination. Measures to safeguard the island’s reputation and ensure future tourism prosperity were highlighted.

A meeting with relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Labor, is scheduled to explore targeted support measures for businesses and address infrastructure needs. This includes preventing landslides and improving emergency exit routes. Initial funding of 3 million euros has been allocated for these projects.

Ongoing discussions with local and regional stakeholders aim to forge a vision for Santorini’s sustainable development, aligning with urban planning objectives for long-term resilience.
