FM Gerapetritis meets with new Syrian leaders, stresses new institutions’ agreement with int’l laws

Following the meetings, Gerapetritis said they discussed Syria's new institutions "following the fall of the totalitarian Assad regime."

Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapetritis met with Syria’s transitional president Ahmad Αl Sharaa and Foreign Affairs Minister Asaad Al Shaibani in Damascus on Sunday.

Following the meetings, Gerapetritis said they discussed Syria’s new institutions “following the fall of the totalitarian Assad regime.”

He added that the institutions “must be founded on rule of law. They must be institutions that are inclusive and tolerant. They must be institutions that are absolutely compatible with International Law and especially with the Law of the Sea.”

As Gerapetritis noted, “Greece is actively present in the region, a member of the United Nations Security Council, a strong member of the European Union, with particular interest in the region due to Christian populations. As a reliable interlocutor in the Arab world, Greece will be present so that calmness and prosperity in the region is ensured.
