The program will initially operate on a voluntary basis but will eventually include mandatory returns. It primarily focuses on individuals aged between 19 and 49 who are capable of working.

Germany new program started in January 2025 and is designed to return refugees to Greece, targeting those who have already been granted protection status in Greece in the past two years.

The program will initially operate on a voluntary basis but will eventually include mandatory returns. It primarily focuses on individuals aged between 19 and 49 who are capable of working.

Developed by the Federal Service for Immigrants and Refugees (BAMF), this initiative follows the Helios project, which concluded last autumn. According to reports from SPIEGEL, those who choose to return, or are eventually required to do so, will receive support from Greek authorities through a specialized program. This program aims to assist returnees in learning the language and finding employment in Greece.

The organizational and financial aspects of the program in Germany will be managed by the German Länder, while the initial costs in Greece will be supported by EU funds. Over time, the Greek government will assume financial responsibility for the program’s implementation. This initiative highlights ongoing efforts to manage refugee movements within the European Union, addressing both humanitarian needs and integration challenges.
