Greek Artistic Swimmer Evangelia Platanioti Named World’s Top Athlete for 2024

Greek artistic swimmer Evangelia Platanioti has been crowned the world’s top athlete for 2024, as determined by a vote from World Aquatics.

This prestigious accolade honors her incredible achievements throughout the year, particularly her performances at the World Championships and the Olympic Games.

Platanioti’s standout moment came at the World Championships in Doha last February, where she secured her first-ever world title in artistic swimming, becoming the first Greek athlete to achieve such a historic feat on the global stage. She earned a gold medal in the Technical Solo event and a silver in the Free Solo competition.

In addition to her world title, Platanioti’s remarkable journey continued at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she helped secure 6th place in the Duet event alongside Sofia Malkogeorgou.

At 30 years old, Platanioti was among a distinguished group of athletes nominated by World Aquatics, which included Jacqueline Simoneau of Canada, Huiyan Xu of China, Klara Bleyer of Germany, and Kyra Hoevertsz of Aruba. Her consistent excellence and remarkable performances throughout the year ultimately led to her being voted as the top artistic swimmer for 2024, a recognition of her exceptional skill and dedication to the sport.
