According to the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in the sea area 27 kilometres southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos.

Α light earthquake of magnitude 4.7 on the Richter scale jolted the island of Amorgos at 11:15 on Wednesday. According to Athens National Observatory’s Geodynamics Institute, the quake’s epicentre was located in the sea region 25 km southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos, and 229 km southeast of Athens.

4.9 magnitude earthquake jolts Amorgos

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred at 10:29 on Wednesday, 228 kilometers southeast of Athens.

According to the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in the sea area 27 kilometres southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos.

Five earthquakes, including one measuring 5 on the Richter scale, between Amorgos and Santorini overnight

Another five earthquakes were recorded early on Wednesday in the sea area between Amorgos and Santorini, according to the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. The “strongest” of these earthquakes, of magnitude 5 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 03:14, some 24 kilometres south-southeast of the community of Arkesini in Amorgos, according to the same source. This was followed by four other light earthquakes, measuring 4, 4.6, 4 and 4.1, respectively, at 03:35, 04:14, 04:18 and 04:23, in the sea area, at a distance of between 20 and 25 kilometers south of the same area. From February 1 to Wednesday, over 1,100 earthquakes have been recorded in the Cyclades region, the strongest of which was 5.3 on the Richter scale, summarised Kostas Papazachos, professor of seismology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Kontogeorgis on Santorini: We are taking measures to keep people safe and support workers and businesses

Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Thanasis Kontogeorgis, in an interview with Talk Radio on Wednesday referring to the swarm of seismic activity in the Cyclades islands, stated that the phenomenon is being closely monitored and that the government has made announcements regarding the support of workers and businesses and for the protection of citizens. He noted that there is a comprehensive effort underway by the Army, the health ministry and other bodies. “We have nothing to say in relation to what you are asking me regarding the tourist season,” he noted, while stressing the importance of remaining calm. Kontogeorgis stated that the government was monitoring how the situation is unfolding and will evaluate whether a new framework of measures is needed, always based on the recommendations of experts, which are taken into account at all levels.
