Greece to Build Emergency Escape Port in Santorini Amid Earthquake Concerns
The decision comes as seismic activity in the region continues to be closely monitored.

Greek Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, announced plans to construct an emergency “escape port” on Santorini to enhance evacuation capabilities in the event of a major earthquake.

The decision comes as seismic activity in the region continues to be closely monitored.

Speaking to Greek broadcaster ANT1 on Monday, Kikilias emphasised the need for caution in public discourse about the recent tremors on the island, urging scientists to communicate responsibly. “The earthquakes have shifted the entire island,” he said, highlighting the importance of preparedness.

The planned escape port, which will be constructed on a strategic part of the island, will allow passenger ships to dock quickly in case of an emergency. “It was decided in a meeting with the Prime Minister that alongside the new port of Santorini, an escape port will also be created,” Kikilias stated. The project is a collaboration between Civil Protection and the Greek Armed Forces, which will oversee its implementation.

Volcanic Activity and Seismic Monitoring

Santorini, known for its active volcanic landscape, has been experiencing geological movements in recent months. Kikilias pointed out the presence of three key volcanoes in the area: the well-known Nea Kameni, the Kolumbo submarine volcano, and a third volcano located between Santorini and Amorgos, which has been linked to recent seismic activity.

According to scientists, there has been a slight increase in activity at Nea Kameni, while Kolumbo has shown ongoing signs of activation. Additionally, magma movements deep within the Earth’s crust—measured at a depth of around five kilometres—are being closely monitored.

Regarding land uplift on the island, Kikilias noted that the phenomenon is occurring across Santorini as a whole rather than in isolated areas. “It could happen gradually or at an accelerated rate. Scientists are observing the situation and providing regular updates,” he explained.

Prioritising Safety and Responsible Communication

Addressing concerns over conflicting statements by experts, Kikilias called for “temperance” in scientific communication, emphasising that local residents, business owners, and tourists should receive clear and responsible information. “People are not required to understand scientific terminology. Our priority—mine, the Prime Minister’s, and the government’s—is the safety of our citizens,” he stressed.

The Minister assured the public that authorities are fully mobilised, with the Civil Protection Agency, security forces, armed forces, and utility companies on standby to respond to any emergencies in Santorini and the surrounding islands. “I have managed major crises such as the pandemic and wildfires. As always, we will provide honest, evidence-based updates to ensure everyone is informed and protected,” Kikilias concluded.

The Greek government remains vigilant, balancing safety measures with Santorini’s vital tourism economy as experts continue to monitor seismic developments.
