In 2023, Greece reported the highest percentage of people experiencing crime, violence, or vandalism in their neighbourhoods among all European Union countries, according to new data released by Eurostat.
Across the EU, 10% of people reported encountering these issues in their local areas. However, Greece stood out with significantly higher figures, particularly among those at risk of poverty.
For people at risk of poverty, 23.7% in Greece reported experiencing crime, violence, or vandalism in their neighbourhoods. This was the highest rate in the EU, followed by the Netherlands at 21.1% and Belgium at 19.5%. In contrast, the lowest percentages were observed in Croatia (1.2%), Poland (2.4%), and Lithuania (3.6%).

A similar trend was observed among those not at risk of poverty. In Greece, 20.2% of people in this category reported crime-related issues, again the highest in the EU. The Netherlands followed at 16.1%, while Bulgaria ranked third with 14.6%. The lowest levels were recorded in Croatia (1.5%), Slovakia (2.4%), and Lithuania (2.5%).
These findings highlight Greece’s ongoing struggles with public perceptions of safety and security, positioning the country as an outlier in the EU when it comes to neighbourhood crime concerns.
