“They accuse us of being criminals and of covering up crimes and we should just listen?“, Adonis Georgiades said tonight.
On the occasion of the German election result, the Minister of Health stressed that “the whole planet is moving to the right. The rightward shift of the planet is not only taking place in Greece, but internationally. The space of the right-wing beyond the New Democracy has grown. There is no leading figure, at least at this stage, in this area. In any case, antisystemism has a great influence in our time. My view is to have courage and speak your mind directly and clearly. These anti-systemic parties present easy solutions for difficult problems, such as immigration, but there are no easy solutions for difficult problems.”
“Of course, we have democracy,” the Health Minister added. “Whoever wants to vote for Konstantopoulou can vote for Konstantopoulou. But this will have a political cost. Konstantopoulou has risen to 9 percent. She very cleverly identified her name with Tempi. It is a case evoking great emotion and she is capitalizing on it politically. As for the concreting, Kyriakos Velopoulos was the first to talk about it. There was intervention, but the court will decide. Velopoulos has lured the entire political system into a theory and I give him political credit for this; it is something I give him credit for. The theory of the cover up was introduced by Stefanos Chios with the Mayhem. This theory says that the government ordered to cover up the area to protect the smuggler, without ever naming who the smuggler was. I find it outrageous. Today, the Supreme Court issued a second statement and says that the appellate investigator was not appointed by Mitsotakis. It is a very detailed announcement, which refutes the conspiracy theories about the appellate investigator.”

In response to a question about Friday’s rallies and the demonstration, Adonis Georgiades claimed: “Has any judge asked for Kostas Karamanlis to be brought to justice? The mob, to which I referred today, is the concept of people’s courts. Just because in a group we say that Karamanlis should be put in jail this does not mean that he should be taken to jail. Justice decides through its competent bodies, through the courts. As far as political responsibilities are concerned, these were assumed by Kostas Karamanlis by resigning. As far as future criminal responsibilities are concerned, Karamanlis has no criminal charges from any court. Karamanlis resigned over political issues and the concreting happened after Karamanlis resigned. So, why are we confusing Karamanlis with the concreting?
Mitsotakis, from his side, said that mistakes may have been made on the ground. The fire department asked for gravel to be thrown. The Prime Minister did not ask for it. There may have been a mistake. But that will be decided in court. The politicians are not responsible. The judges are competent on this.”
Asked about the possible anti-Mitsotsokakis bias of Friday’s rally, the Health Minister said: “I don’t want to fight. Who believes it is a peaceful rally to pay tribute to the victims of the accident? I have put up a poster with the face of a Syriza MP candidate. This is party exploitation. KKE is calling for a rally on Friday. It is not a politically neutral rally. Anyone who says that the rally is not political is fooling themselves. The rally has an anti-government and anti-Mitsotakian bias.”
Referring then to how the New Democrats should react, the Health Minister noted that “we have blood in our veins and our blood does not run Freon. We are accused of being paedophiles and criminals and we should just listen? I am tired of being accused of a cover up. Patience is not endless. When you are called a criminal and a smuggler, you cannot always hold back your patience.”
On whether there is a destabilisation plan, it was argued: “I recall that in democracies these things happen. In 2008, the late Dimitris Kontominas wanted to bring down Theo Roussopoulos. In the end, Karamanlis government fell in 2009, but it turned out afterwards that there was no accusation against New Democracy and Kostas Karamanlis. It is certain that the idea of a strong prime minister is not always pleasant to some. For example, Antonis Kanakis and Radio Arvila were swearing at me for an hour and a half today. To be insulted by a supposedly humorous show for an hour and a half shows the level of toxicity we have reached. The toxicity of these days exceeds even the era of the memorandum.
Speaking about whether he was threatened with assassination at the rally, Adonis Georgiades added: “Have you seen what they write about me on Ticktock? I am not going to risk my life so much and go to the rally. Countries are hard to get back on their feet and easy to collapse. In the last six years, we’ve had economic growth, tourism, reduced unemployment – none of this comes easy. There is now a huge amount of toxicity being spewed out these days. Me and my children getting cancer is the least of it. I always fight toxicity. We all want light on the tragedy of Tempi but in an institutional way and not with rallies and people’s courts.
