Germany has officially launched a new program aimed at repatriating refugees back to Greece. This initiative, which started in January 2025, is designed to facilitate the return of individuals who have already been granted protection status in Greece within the last two years.
The program will initially allow voluntary participation, but it also aims to enforce mandatory returns for specific groups. Individuals eligible for this program must be between the ages of 19 and 49 and possess the capability to work.
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) is overseeing the development of this program, which builds on the Helios project that concluded in the autumn of last year. According to a report by SPIEGEL, returning refugees will receive support from the Greek authorities through a dedicated initiative. Subsequently, they will have the opportunity to participate in another program focused on language acquisition and integration into the workforce.
The financial and organizational aspects of the program will be handled by various German states, while the initial costs incurred in Greece will be funded by the European Union. Eventually, the financial burden will shift to the Greek government.
As predominantly European nations continue to navigate their refugee policies, this latest development highlights ongoing efforts to manage migration while addressing the needs of both refugees and host countries.
