The debate, requested by SYRIZA and the Communist Party (KKE), will address what they have referred to as the “Tempi crime.”

Political attention in Greece is focused on the Parliament today, where leaders from various political parties will engage in a debate about the tragic Tempi train accident.

The debate, requested by SYRIZA and the Communist Party (KKE), will address what they have referred to as the “Tempi crime.”

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will open the session, followed by the two leaders who initiated the request: Dimitris Koutsoubas, General Secretary of KKE, and Sokratis Famellos, leader of SYRIZA.

A key moment in the session will be the motion of censure that PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis is expected to present. This follows recent findings from the National Organization for Investigating Air and Rail Accidents and Transport Safety (EODASAAM) about the Tempi accident.

Androulakis has called on all progressive opposition parties to support his motion, which requires at least 50 MP signatures. With PASOK holding 32 MPs, the party is working to secure the necessary backing.

According to Article 84 of the Greek Constitution, a censure debate must begin two days after submission unless the government requests an immediate start. The debate cannot exceed three days, with a vote taking place immediately after its conclusion, though the government may request a 48-hour delay for the vote if approved by the absolute majority of MPs. The outcome of this debate could have significant political implications as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the train tragedy.
