The announcement of the demonstration came after protesters gathered in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra and Larissa on Wednesday to voice their support for a no-confidence motion against the center-right administration in Parliament.

School and university students are increasing the pressure on the embattled government over its handling of the 2023 Tempe rail disaster, announcing a new protest rally for Friday.

The announcement of the demonstration came after protesters gathered in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra and Larissa on Wednesday to voice their support for a no-confidence motion against the center-right administration in Parliament.

It also comes in the wake of a massive movement last Friday, that saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks all over the country and abroad demanding justice and political accountability for the deadly crash, which claimed 57 lives, mainly university students.

Like the main of last Friday’s rallies, Wednesday’s demonstrations were marred by clashes between a small number of protesters and police.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his government have come under fire for their handling of the disaster and are facing a censure motion in Parliament, which was tabled on Wednesday by 85 opposition MPs from PASOK, SYRIZA, New Freedom and New Left, as well as nine independent lawmakers.

The motion of no confidence is expected to reach its conclusion on Friday.

The new rally has been planned for 12 noon in front of the historic seat of Athens University on Panepistimiou Street and will head to Parliament, causing traffic and public transportation upheavals in the city center.
