As of March 2025, this figure marks an increase from the 4,212 ships recorded the previous year.

The global maritime network is increasingly tied together by a record-breaking 4,221 Greek-owned ships, according to the latest annual survey conducted for the Committee for ships over 1,000 gt by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

As of March 2025, this figure marks an increase from the 4,212 ships recorded the previous year.

The Greek Shipping Cooperation Committee in London highlighted the continued global dominance of the Greek-owned fleet, despite a notable decline in the use of the Greek flag. The 2025 survey revealed that the Greek-owned fleet reached a historic high of 4,221 vessels across various categories, boasting a total capacity of 354,092,466 deadweight tons (dwt) and 208,010,850 gross tons (gt). However, this growth in numbers was accompanied by a capacity reduction of 1.11 million dwt and 241,738 gt compared to the prior year, reflecting a net gain of nine ships.

The report excludes 456 ships of various types currently under construction at shipyards, which collectively account for 43,186,564 dwt and 27,035,837 gt according to greek city times

Decline of the Greek Flag

The Committee’s 2024 report noted a significant milestone: the Greek flag dipped below 500 ships over 1,000 gt for the first time, settling at 496 vessels. This downward trend continued into 2025, with a further decrease of 16 ships, bringing the total to 480 ships registered under the Greek flag. Capacity also saw a slight decline, with figures dropping to 29,551,538 gt and 48,717,807 dwt from the previous year’s 30,759,394 gt and 51,694,269 dwt, as outlined in the Committee’s latest findings.

Interestingly, this weakening of the Greek registry coincides with Greek shipowners strengthening their foothold in European registries. The total number of ships flying EU flags now stands at 1,414, representing 33.5% of the Greek fleet—up from 1,278 ships, or 30.3%, in the previous year. The report further indicates that Greek interests are distributed across approximately 29 different flags worldwide according to greek city times
