Greece has reaffirmed its commitment to completing a high-capacity electricity cable linking the power grids of Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, despite ongoing setbacks. The Great Sea Interconnector project, valued at €1.9 billion ($2.06 billion), remains on schedule for completion by the end of the decade, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis confirmed on Thursday following trilateral talks in Athens with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos accοrding to Greek city times
“The Great Sea Interconnector will be completed as planned. We are taking steps to ensure there are no obstacles to its progress,” Gerapetritis stated during a joint press conference.
Strategic Project for Energy Security
The project, which has received backing from the European Union, aims to enhance energy security by linking the power networks of the three Mediterranean nations. The submarine power cable will span approximately 1,210 kilometres (750 miles) and will be laid at depths reaching 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) below sea level, making it one of the most ambitious electrical infrastructure undertakings in the region.
Upon completion, the interconnector is expected to improve energy diversification, bolster grid stability, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting cross-border electricity trade, it aligns with the EU’s broader goals for a sustainable energy transition and carbon neutrality accοrding to Greek city times
Challenges and Geopolitical Complexities
Despite its strategic importance, the initiative has faced a series of financial and technical challenges. Disagreements over project financing have delayed progress, while geopolitical tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean—particularly longstanding maritime boundary disputes between Greece and Turkey—have added further complications.
The three governments reiterated their commitment to overcoming these hurdles, stressing that that the interconnector is crucial for regional cooperation and long-term energy security. Gerapetritis highlighted the project’s significance not only for Greece, Cyprus, and Israel but also for Europe, describing it as a critical infrastructure initiative with far-reaching benefits beyond the immediate region.
“We recognise that interconnection projects are of critical importance for stability, energy security, and regional security. Not just for our region, but for Europe as a whole,” the Greek foreign minister stated accοrding to Greek city times
