In the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Democracy Index 2024, Greece has slipped five places, landing at 25th globally with an overall score of 8.07. Though still classified as a “full democracy,” the drop highlights persistent weaknesses, particularly in government functioning.
Greece earned a flawless 10 in “Electoral Process and Pluralism,” underscoring the robustness of its electoral framework. However, its score plummeted to 6.79 in government functioning, pointing to deficiencies in transparency, accountability, and administrative efficiency.
Other categories revealed a mixed picture: political participation scored 7.22, suggesting civic involvement beyond voting could improve, while political culture stood at 7.50. Civil liberties performed well at 8.82, indicating solid protection of basic rights. Yet, challenges like curtailed press freedom, threats to judicial independence, and government meddling in media and protests capped Greece’s potential for a higher ranking according to greek city times
Globally, Northern European countries dominated the index. Norway topped the list at 9.81, followed by New Zealand (9.61), Sweden (9.39), Iceland (9.38), Switzerland (9.32), Finland (9.30), and Denmark (9.28). These nations set the benchmark for democracy with their stable institutions, active political engagement, and efficient governance.
