Elon Musk, the billionaire innovator and owner of X, was left in awe by the ancient Greek sculpture “Winged Victory of Samothrace.” Reacting to a thread of stunning classical sculptures posted by an X user, Musk reposted an image of the iconic statue—currently housed at the Louvre Museum—captioning it simply with one word: “beauty.”

The “Winged Victory of Samothrace,” dating back to around 190 BCE, stands at 3.28 meters tall (5.58 meters with its marble ship’s prow base) and was created to honor the goddess Nike and a naval victory. Discovered on the island of Samothrace, the sculpture has captivated art lovers since it was first exhibited at the Louvre in 1884. Musk’s followers echoed his sentiment, praising the brilliance of ancient Greek art and lamenting the lack of comparable works today.

The statue’s history is as remarkable as its form. One of three winged Victories found at the Samothrace Sanctuary, its right hand—reconstructed after fragments were uncovered in 1950—revealed it did not hold a trumpet, as once thought. Experts believe it was designed to be viewed from a three-quarter left angle, a hallmark of Hellenistic craftsmanship. Theories suggest it may commemorate a Rhodian victory over Antiochus III in 191 BCE.
