Greece, a Mediterranean gem famed for its idyllic islands, attracts millions of tourists annually

However, a Greek native has sounded the alarm about two of the nation’s most celebrated destinations—Mykonos and Santorini—urging visitors to avoid them at all costs.
In a candid Reddit post, the local, who claims to have been born and raised in Greece, didn’t mince words: “Avoid Mykonos, Santorini, and other overly touristy places.” Likening the islands to a plague, they criticized the exorbitant costs and questioned the value of chasing Instagram-worthy moments, such as Santorini’s renowned sunsets or its whitewashed hilltop villages. “Sure, you want those stunning Santorini sunset shots and to admire the postcard-perfect houses on the hills—but is it really worth shelling out a fortune for?” they wrote.
The warning didn’t stop there. “And I mean a fortune,” they emphasized. “We Greeks steer clear of these spots because of their outrageous prices and call them tourist traps for a reason. Greece has so many other islands to explore. My advice? Skip these two like the plague.”
The local went on to explain that basic goods and services on Mykonos and Santorini come with jaw-dropping price tags, making them impractical for anything beyond a brief visit. “These places charge sky-high prices for even the basics and are best for a quick three-day visit, tops, if you ask me,” they added.
Mykonos and Santorini have long been synonymous with luxury and glamour, drawing throngs of overnight visitors and cruise ship day-trippers, especially during the summer peak. Their popularity, however, has driven costs to levels that many locals—and now some tourists—find unjustifiable according to greek city times and Express.co.uk
Beyond the islands, the local also offered advice about Greece’s capital. While Athens, with its rich history and iconic Acropolis, remains a must-see, they cautioned against spending an entire trip there. “Don’t come to Greece and just camp out in Athens the whole time,” they wrote on social media. “Hop on a bus, rent a car, or take a ferry—explore nearby islands or go on a road trip.”
With thousands of lesser-known islands waiting to be discovered, the local’s advice serves as a reminder that Greece’s true treasures might lie off the beaten path—far from the crowded, costly shores of Mykonos and Santorini.
