National Defense, Development ministers sign ‘Thorax’ threat-assessment system for Armed Forces

‘Agenda 2030’ will lead to the strongest Armed Forces Greece ever had, National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias underlined during the signing of the agreement on Monday for threat-assessment system named ‘Thorax’ that will process big data to prioritize threats and how to manage them.

Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos, signing the contract with Dendias, said that “we are boosting the national defense and security of both Greece and its citizens.”

The Development ministry will fund Thorax with 48,950,000 euros from Recovery Fund resources. The agreement’s signing took place at the Development ministry and was attended by government officials and representatives of contractors Nova and Cosmos Business Systems.

As Dendias explained, “This system collects data from all sensors we possess – radar, aerial and land means, UAVs, observatories, electronic means, and from all agencies, not only of the Armed Forces, but from Hellenic Police, Port Authority, and Civil Protection. It classifies the data, prioritizes it, process it, and from then on presents this advanced product – which obviously includes artificial intelligence – to the right unit and agency responsible for a decision each time. It also facilitates taking this decision, through incorporating operational processes.”

Theodorikakos also spoke of an upcoming new develoment law that will focus on border areas. As he said, “the best long-term and strategic defense is economic growth, investments, work positions in border areas, policies that contribute to managing the low birth rate and the reduction of social and regional inequalities.” He noted that Thorax will also allow security forces at the borders to carry out their duties more effectively and safely.
