This is an attempt to tackle persistent shortages in the national healthcare system and strengthen regional medical services.

According to ProtoThema, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a new legislative initiative aimed at encouraging the repatriation of Greek doctors currently working in the United States during his speech at the “Prix Galien Greece 2025” awards ceremony at the Megaron Concert Hall on Thursday according to greek city times

This is an attempt to tackle persistent shortages in the national healthcare system and strengthen regional medical services.

Mitsotakis’ proposed measure, which will be submitted to Parliament for a vote next week, seeks to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles for Greek-trained physicians abroad who wish to return and practice in Greece.

Under the new law, returning doctors will be able to automatically validate their medical specialties and qualifications by applying through the Medical Association of Greece, streamlining what has historically been a complex and time-consuming process.

In addition to the legislative change, the government is introducing a set of financial incentives aimed at attracting and retaining medical professionals in underserved and remote areas of the country. Monthly bonuses ranging from €200 to €600 will be offered, depending on the region and medical specialty, with the goal of improving healthcare access in these communities.

The initiative is part of a broader governmental effort to revitalise the National Health System (ESY), especially in the wake of ongoing staff shortage that exacerbated during Greece’s financial crisis.
