Maria Sakkari is through to the second round of the Italian Open after Swiss opponent Belinda Bencic was forced to retire mid-match on Wednesday evening in Rome.
Sakkari, currently ranked No. 81, was leading 6-2 when Bencic, ranked No. 39, withdrew from the match due to injury at the Foro Italico.
