In the case of Beleri, that rule is unlikely to affect the outcome, as he is serving time for a crime committed in a non-EU member country.
Beleri, who has been elected to the European Parliament under New Democracy on June 9 in Greece, has been detained since May 2023 on charges of voter fraud, an accusation he has repeatedly denied. Greece has protested his detention repeatedly and internationally.
An emergency European Council meeting will be held at the end of January, he added, to facilitate an agreement on the framework accepted by the 26 countries and not by Hungary.
“There is no need for every decision, such as the opening or closing of negotiation chapters, to depend on each member country,” Scholz said. “If countries like Albania have made important reforms, this should be appreciated. Otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the entire membership process, and we should not allow this.”
The same sources underlined that Greece's position is clear and has been explained to the Albanian side.
