According to the Ministry of Transport, the new RTC aims to bring significant changes in road behavior and public safety, with the ultimate goal of substantially reducing traffic fatalities in Greece.
Greece has been lobbying for their return to the country for almost 200 years.
The problem is present in all mountainous areas of Greece and in recent years has intensified in Tzoumerka, the Achelous Valley, and Agrafa, also affecting Kitheronas – to a lesser extent – Helicon, parts of Epirus, and the Peloponnese.
The early repayment will be partially funded by the government’s cash reserves, which, according to the Public Debt Management Agency, stood at 40.1 billion euros at the end of the first quarter of 2025.
According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), 665 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2024, while Greece remains among the European Union countries with the highest rates of road fatalities. Data from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) ranks Greece seventh across the bloc for traffic-related deaths.
