Greece ranks among the EU countries with the highest proportion of low-paid workers. Specifically, 21.7% of workers earn two-thirds or less of the median gross hourly wage—placing Greece fourth after Bulgaria, Romania, and Latvia. The EU average is 14.7%, while in the Eurozone it’s slightly lower at 14.3%.
The majority of travellers still favour intra-European destinations, particularly neighbouring or non-neighbouring countries. Southern and Mediterranean Europe continues to top the regional travel charts, attracting 41% of prospective visitors. Notably though, this figure reflects an 8% year-on-year decline—potentially linked to rising summer temperatures and climate concerns.
“We have an obligation to preserve the identity and character of our unique historic center,” said Athens Mayor Haris Doukas. “Cracking down on illegal activities and the reckless commercialization of our historic sites is a top priority, so that we can pass on a rich legacy to the younger generations.”
